Comments is an interesting topic. It has been the default for user feedback for most of the Web. However it has a troubled history as it seems to attract a lot of noise and nastiness.
After studying conversation I concluded that the problem with comments are twofold:
- There is no topic, any comment is valid.
- The replies are not aggregated, instead the comment is printed as is.
The effect is that everybody potentially gets a task of reading a large body of comments rather than a short summary. Rethought, I think comments have great potential.
